When words are many…

Have you ever just been hit with a scripture that just knocked you out?

Last week The Resurgence sent out scripture verse as they often do but this one gave me more reason to pause and reflect than most. Because it struck a nerve.

When words are many transgressions are not lacking, but whomever retrains his lips is prudent. — Prov 10:19

It is no secret to anyone who knows me that I have a big mouth. I love to talk, one of my favorite activities is to sit around and have a good conversation.  Most of my friends are story telling, entertaining personalities we are an outgoing group the often lets our mouths go for the sake of a good time.  Often I have gotten to the end of the night and thought “that went to far”

Recently, I have found my mouth getting me into trouble the more I talk. Honestly at time I think it is my pride and ego the causes me to talk because I want to be though of more highly than I deserve. In reality I should more often keep my mouth shut.

When I read these passages of scripture there is one thing I can’t help but bring up. I will only ask one question. Why is it that of all the tithe sermons and sermonettes I have heard in my ears in a health and wealth church, I never heard anyone mention Deut. 14? Where the Israelites are commanded to eat their tithe in the presence of the Lord?

I did love reading of the feasts of Israel and thinking of how Jesus was the fulfillment of them. I wish I still had the paper I had to write in college on that topic. It really gave great coherence to the Old Testament when I realized that Jesus had fulfilled all of those feasts.

Maybe someday I will restudy it out for my own benefit. I don’t even know if I remember how most of them fit together now, which is a shame.

This too shall Pass

Due to a family emergency I have been out of town and have fallen behind in my blogging.  I am still on task with my bible reading but haven’t had time to write.
So here is something cool I just found that I thought was aptly named.  “This Too shall Pass”

Hopefully I will be back on task next week.

Assuming the Gospel

Matt Chandler continues to be one of my heroes.  Because he is preaching in the “Evangellical capital of the world.”  He speaks to a lot of things that i see in myself.

There are so many reasons why people walk away from the church and Christ but I have come to believe more than ever it is because we are assuming the Gospel and preaching sanctification.  This message sums it up much better than I ever could.

moralistic therapeutic deism

Moralistic Therapeutic Deism has become a bit of a catch phrase in certain circles it comes from, Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers, a book by Christian Smith.  I read it when I was in youth ministry and it shocked me.  Most of our teens (and adults for that matter) don’t have a good view of what the Gospel really is.

This is a great video from the Resurgence.  As someone who has worked in youth ministry I found the book Soul Searching that Dr. Horton refers to to be a shock.  It is well worth the look.
